getting there: costa rica, part 1

We were due for a vacation, so headed off to Costa Rica for eight days. Little did we know what to expect, and how long it would take us to get to paradise in the picture below. It was worth it.

The flight was easy--five hours from Los Angeles to San Jose. Getting out of San Jose alone took a good 30 minutes of zig zagging around to find "the" highway. Once we were on the highway, I thought, "No big deal--we'll just take this the whole way to the ferry, then get back on it when we get off the ferry, and take it all the way to the hotel." Not so much. The highway ended, and we found ourselves driving through lots of little towns. The main road to get to the ferry wasn't exactly the main roads we're used to. This main road barely had room for two cars to pass, all while trying to dodge dogs, children, bikes, and motorcycles. After a few wrong turns, we made it to the ferry. The crossing took about one hour. Once we got off the ferry, it seemed fairly straightforward--stay on this road all the way to Santa Teresa. Wrong again. "This road" ended up being a dirt road that wound along the coast for what seemed like five hours, but was probably two or three hours. The only paved sections were the parts of the road that were extremely steep. And the bridges were narrower than the roads, and barely fit one car.

After passing many fields, forests, bungalows, Coca-Cola shacks, and cows, we started seeing signs for our hotel, Nautilus Boutique Hotel.

After a few more dirt roads, we arrived in Playa Santa Teresa. The main road going through town was only a couple of miles long, lined with restaurants, small hotels, and large pieces of land--some with mansions on them, and others with shacks. The street was crowded with people, dogs, and motorcycles.

Santa Teresa early in the morning

Our hotel was a beautiful oasis, with each guest having their own bungalow and patio surrounded with dense foliage. The owners were so welcoming, and everyone there so kind and helpful.

Upon arrival, I immediately jumped into the refreshing pool

Nap time

Enjoyed our patio every evening with a glass of wine

Every night, the whole town headed to the beach to enjoy the sunset. On our first night, we walked down the beach to a restaurant called Habanero to watch the sunset while drinking a margarita and eating the fresh catch of the day. I think I ate the fresh catch of the day and/or ceviche every day, if not most meals.

summer in the marina

It's been a busy summer, and is going by entirely too fast. The beach has had more June gloom than normal, so we love it when the sun comes out and bask in it's warmth for as long as it decides to stay.

The colors of summer are my favorite--the sun shining on the sea gives it that warm inviting feel
(even if the water is 60 degrees!)

Even the surfboard designs seem to be following the bright color trend!

You can always find crowds in the water, regardless of the weather

It's nice to curl up on the couch with some good coffee after a morning surf session

Emma loves the cool weather

Summer is a time for feasting on our favorite fresh foods and locally grown produce

...and birthday drinks!

A little trip to Deus Ex Machina satisfies both his and hers loves

And summer would not be complete without a beach sunset

live simply.

There is not much more to say, except that I am trying to do this...

Yes trying to surf more (a must), but also re-teaching myself how to live more simply and enjoy life and what (and who) I've been blessed with.

Life is more fun with a surfboard under your feet, and friends to share the ocean with!

how do you work it out?

Anyone who knows me, knows I have workout A.D.D...big time. I get hooked on a gym or into one fitness craze for a month or two, then find something new I love. I'm not much of a gym rat--I'd rather be outside running, surfing, or biking. But I do love workout classes and specialty gyms.

One of my favorites was the month I bought at a spin studio in Studio City called Lotus Kitty Yoga & Power Cycling. Another amazing workout is Krav Maga, which I did for a couple of months at one of their worldwide gyms in Sherman Oaks. The warm up alone was killer, and the workouts toned my arms and core and built up my upper body strength more than anything had in a very long time.

I know everyone is really into CrossFit right now. I've done it a few times, and have a number of obsessed friends who do it. I think there are a lot of great principles to it and some excellent workouts, but I don't think it is for everyone (just like any workout regime). I just bought an unlimited month at Focus Self-Defense and Fitness in Culver City. I like that they offer a range of classes including Krav Maga, CrossFit, Self Defense, & Cardio. I personally think offering more than just one type of workout keeps people interested, plus is great for your body.

The key to sticking with a workout is finding something you enjoy doing--otherwise you just won't continue to go. In my case, it's not that I don't enjoy almost all workouts, it's that I like them all and want to try everything! Find your passion, and I guarantee you'll stick with it and see results.

A great way to be able to try out different workouts and see what works for you is through Groupon and LivingSocial. You save a bunch of money, and it allows you to test the studios and teachers before fully committing to any kind of membership or contract.

nothing says spring like...

...a little trip to MAUI!

Don't be too jealous...I've only been waiting my whole life to go, and finally get to in April.

In keeping with my love for planning (thanks, Mom), here's the proposed itinerary:

Tuesday:
Arrive in Maui
Lounge at the beach, and maybe get a little surfing in before dinner

Note: I have never surfed in warm water...it's winter wetsuit weather all year here in "sunny" SoCal

Wednesday:
Farmer's Market
Hit up Lahaina & the Maui Brewing Co. (shopping too, of course)

Thursday:
Snorkeling with Trilogy

Friday:
Surf
Feast at Lele Luau

Saturday:
Lounge at the beach and surf

Sunday:
Hike
Any suggestions on a good hike?

Monday:
Head home
That's a big maybe

mermaid's view

my view

Born & raised in Los Angeles, I was never far from the ocean. My grandfather took us to the beach almost every weekend during the summer months. Once I got my drivers license, I regularly made trips to the beach--even if it was just to get a coffee and walk on the sand at night. When I started surfing, I'd meet my girlfriends every weekend and couldn't wait to jump in the cold water.

But it was never close enough.

Now I'm almost 30 and this California girl has finally gotten her wish--not only do I live near the ocean, but I can see it every time I look outside my windows or lounge on my water-front deck.

This blog is dedicated to those who LOVE the ocean, surfing, health, nutrition, & fitness.
